Support Vector Machines and TensorFlow
TensorFlow supplies differentiable tensor operations and Keras training infrastructure, but TensorFlow core does not ship a maintained kernel SVM estimator comparable to scikit-learn's SVC or SVR.
Why the previous custom model was removed
The former page trained a linear layer with a hand-written hinge loss and called it an SVM. Its labels remained 0 and 1 even though binary hinge loss requires signed targets such as -1 and +1, so class 0 contributed no margin loss. It also multiplied the weight penalty by C; in the standard soft-margin objective, larger C increases the penalty on margin violations relative to the weight norm. The example therefore taught the opposite regularization relationship.
Even a corrected gradient exercise would be only a linear hinge-loss classifier. It would not reproduce a mature SVM solver's convergence checks, dual optimization, support-vector representation, nonlinear kernels, sample/class weights, multiclass reduction, or probability calibration.
Recommended workflow
Use a maintained classical implementation for the classical model:
- split observations using IID, group-aware, or time-aware boundaries appropriate to the data;
- place
StandardScalerandSVCin one scikit-learnPipelineso every cross-validation fold fits its own scaler; - tune
Cand kernel-specific parameters such as RBFgammaonly on training folds; - evaluate the chosen pipeline once on the isolated test set;
- calibrate scores on training data when probabilities are required, rather than interpreting margins as probabilities.
For large approximately linear problems, compare LinearSVC or an SGD hinge-loss classifier. Kernel SVC fit time grows at least quadratically with the number of samples and can become impractical.
Interoperating with TensorFlow
TensorFlow may produce learned embeddings that feed the SVM. Freeze the chosen encoder before fitting the SVM, generate validation and test embeddings without updating it, and never tune the encoder or SVM against test labels. Persist the encoder, scaler, SVM, feature order, and class mapping as an explicit composed system.
If the purpose is to teach hinge loss inside a neural training loop, label it as a linear hinge-loss model, use signed targets, and state that it is not a drop-in SVC. That exercise is about optimization primitives, not about replacing a maintained SVM library.
